I am writing to request your help. I have the opportunity to accomplish one of my lifetime goals..while at the same time, helping a worthy organization raise funds for a good cause.
Ok so this may sound crazy but the goal I speak of is running a marathon. Yes! 26.2 miles. I will be running the Motorola Marathon in Austin, Texas on February 15, 2004. I have always wanted to attempt to run a Marathon, and this gives me a great opportunity to realize that dream and do something good for the Leukemia Society. But enough about me, let’s talk about how we can all help!
You might wonder how my running a marathon will help to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? As a member of Team in Training (part of the society), I have commited to raise $2,000 minimum. Yes, I know that it’s a lot of money $$$$
However, this money is used to fund research, provide patient aid, public and professional education and community service. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
How about some statistics:
It is estimated that leukemia and its related cancers, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma may strike some 107,900 Americans each year and kills 60,500.
Thirty years ago there was no effective treatment for leukemia. Good news! The research is working! Today, one out of every four adults stricken with leukemia will achieve long term survival and 85% of children diagnosed will be cured.
Unfortunately, their work is not done. Even with these great strides, leukemia causes more deaths than any other disease among children under age 15. Every nine minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. This statistic represents 160 people each day - seven people every hour.
A special feature of this program is matching up team members with someone undergoing treatment for leukemia or its related cancers. My honorary teammates are 11 year Hillary. Hillary was diagnosed with ALL on August 26, 2002. I am also running in Honor of my Mother Zelma Faye Toles, who lost her battle with Leukemia when I was 7 years old.
